STATEMENT FROM VMR PRODUCTS REGARDING NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE’S ‘HIDDEN FORMALDEHYDE IN E-CIGARETTE AEROSOLS’ REPORT
Miami, FL (February 9, 2015) – In response to a recent report published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) titled “Hidden Formaldehyde in E-Cigarette Aerosols,” VMR Products, a global leader in the electronic cigarette industry and the makers of V2®, one of the nation’s leading brands of electronic cigarette products, has the following comment:
In a series of well-documented rebuttals from the broader scientific community, the conclusions in the article, “Hidden Formaldehyde in E-Cigarette Aerosols,” were demonstrated to be irrelevant, as the conditions required to produce formaldehyde are impossible to create under normal usage of e-cigarettes.
In relation to VMR products, we want to ensure customers as well as partners know the following:
1. VMR e-cigarettes vaporize e-liquids at a temperature between 200 – 300 degrees Celsius. In order to generate formaldehyde, the temperature must exceed 500 degrees Celsius. VMR e-cigarettes never get that hot, thus formaldehyde cannot be produced.
2. VMR e-cigarettes are designed for use with e-liquid. The NEJM-published study showed production of formaldehyde under “dry” conditions. In other words, there was no e-liquid used with the e-cigarette. A so-called “dry puff” condition makes no vapor, has no flavor and is generally an unpleasant experience. No e-cigarette user would puff on an empty e-cigarette for a period of time long enough to create formaldehyde-producing conditions.
VMR stands by the broader scientific community in its assessment of the NEJM article’s conclusions. In summary, the study only shows that any product, including e-cigarettes, can be misused in an attempt to create a hazardous condition. When used as designed, e-cigarettes pose no formaldehyde risk.
